Worst drought predicted for Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is in for a drought of epic proportions, according to the Ministry of Public Utilities and the Water and Sewerage Company Inc (WASCO).

Minister Dr. James Fletcher has said that this is something that could continue in years to come and government is doing all it can to ensure that the effects of this drought is limited.

The minister said projections for climate change are suggesting that the world may experience between 10 to 20 percent reduction in water availability, as a result of the warming of the planet.

Saint Lucia, he said, must therefore make preparations in advance, to ensure that it conserve on its water resources to be able to survive throughout this serious drought season.

But WASCO has already been actively engaged in undertaking works at various locations across the country, particularly putting measures in place to have the John Compton Dam desilted.

The Ministry, together with WASCO, are looking at commissioning two desalination plants, one for the North and another for the South of the island, during this period.

Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony has said in the face of the prolonged dry spell being predicted in coming months, householders, employers, and agriculturists must take action to safeguard themselves.

Researchers believe the Caribbean is entering a period of extended dry periods never before seen.

Forecasters say El Nino phenomenon is gathering strength and will continue to warm the tropical pacific, which translates into sparse rainfall for this largely parched region as the dry season approaches.
