‘Pep’ leaving elective politics

‘Pep’ is bowing out of politics.

Doctor Desmond Long, better known by his calypso stage name ‘ The Mighty Pep’, will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming general elections, well placed sources have said.

According to information, ‘Pep’ has already made his intention known to the top brass the ruling Saint Lucia Party (SLP).

Doctor Long, a medical doctor by profession, is the current representative for Anse La Raye Canaries.

SLP insiders said that despite several attempts by his constituency group to have him clear the air on the future of his candidacy, the MP has refrained from doing so.

One insider disclosed that the group had invited Long to at least three meetings, two in December last year and one this month, to make his intentions clear.

However the official declared that the MP attended none.

Five hopefuls are in line to succeed ‘Pep’ as the ruling party candidate for Anse La Raye Canaries.

The selection process is due to get underway soon, according to reports.

The incumbent MP joins another sitting labour MP, Doctor Robert Lewis, in bowing out of elective politics.

Lewis, who served two terms as the representative for Castries South, is currently Saint Lucia Minister of Education, Human Resource Development and Labour.
